Plastic Hauntings: Mondo’s Peter and Samhain Timed Edition
Who Ya Gonna Collect?
by S.C.
To be honest, most figure sets and toys don’t hit this hard. I truly can’t remember the last time I saw a figure that hit me with nostalgia this hard and left me with that feeling of “I absolutely need this for my collection”. From the moment I opened the box of this timed edition two-pack featuring Peter and Samhain, it felt like they both stepped through the screen and into reality. This first release in Mondo’s RGB line feels like it was created for all of us who remember what it felt like to watch “When Halloween Was Forever”.
The Packaging: An Homage to the Series
When you first take the box out of the shipper you are greeted by the doors to the firehouse. They accomplished a wonderful and fitting homage to the animated series firehouse. The glow of the light feels like the team’s inside, the traps are primed, and they’re ready to believe you. You can almost hear Janine answering the phone, and the rest of the crew scrambling into action, proton packs sparking as chaos is about to erupt.
Mondo didn’t just design a box, they designed a companion piece that deserves to be on the shelf just as much as the figures do.
Bonus: Not pictured since I missed it when unboxing were these awesome ghost cutouts. They reminded me of the old cutouts that came with the Ghost Popper for target practice.
Flip the box around and you’re in full cartoon alleyway mode — graffiti skull and crossbones, trash, a snarling ghost bursting from a garbage can, and a huge spray-painted SLIMER tag. All of these feel like little details added with love that would’ve fit perfectly in the background of any of the old episodes.
Mondo didn’t just design a box, they designed a companion piece that deserves to be on the shelf just as much as the figures do. It’s a memory captured in cardboard.
“Nobody picks on the Spud but me, Got it?
Peter’s figure looks exactly how I remember him — teal collar, hair up, and the smirk of somebody who’s always up to something. They really went for it with the paint application matching every color as close as they possibly could. What really sold it was the matte finish which added to that straight from the cel look.
Peter comes with a proton pack, an extra head, gloved hands, a ghost trap, and a proton stream that attaches to the neutrino wand. It was an absolute blast to set up for pictures. I know articulation matters especially for the toy photographers out there. This figure was solidly made and that goes for the joints on it as well. As the box says on the back “collectors model-this is not a toy”. You’ll definitely be able to get some fun poses out of him, especially that power stance he takes when firing his proton pack off at a ghost or goblin. Beyond that though this figure isn’t really meant to have his pose changed very often. As easy as it was to swap heads/hands at the end of the day it does come with the usual fragileness of a collectible.
This set also comes with the most accurate Slimer figure hovering on a slime dripping green base. The sculpt manages to capture his classic huge grin (equal parts mascot and ectoplasmic pest). This figure got me very excited because with a little DIY you could easily make an Ecto-Cooler diorama.
All things of the night are mine, on this night more than any other. For I am Samhain, I am Halloween!
The first thing you notice about Samhain is that he is massive next to Peter. He towers over Peter — his robe flows in stylized lines that somehow give him the floating, creepy presence we all felt when watching his legendary Halloween episodes. The main head sculpt is perfect, but Mondo was awesome enough to include two other head sculpts. If you remember the episode you know Samhain shows a mix of emotions and they made sure to capture the best ones.
His additional accessories also include a smaller ghost form mid-capture (which actually fits the trap), and a set of alternate hands. There was something special about posing him across from Peter. It really felt like a dream come true finally being able to have a Samhain figure. He was the figure I had always hoped they would drop but never did.
It was fun posing Peter in full ghostbusting gear with Samhain. It was like seeing the climactic scene from “When Halloween was Forever” come to life (minus the rest of the team. Egon, Ray and Winston are being released so this final battle will be possible to recreate in full soon).
Final Thoughts: This Is Why We Collect
Mondo didn’t just give us figures — they gave us a dream made reality. Mondo was able to capture in plastic form what it felt like to be a kid in October, flipping through TV channels and landing on a Real Ghostbusters Episode that was strange, spooky, and totally unforgettable. The Real Ghostbusters and Samhain have always been hand in hand in my mind and this set finally brings that epic and favorite episode to life.
If you’re a huge fan of The Real Ghostbusters then having picked up this set was a no-brainer. If you’re just a fan of Halloween and all things spooky? This set still hits the mark. This set was really everything I could’ve asked for when I was little and it feels even more special as an adult. In the coming months Mondo will be releasing the rest of the team and I can’t wait to see how they turn out. Knowing I’ll be able to assemble Peter, Winston, Egon and Ray on the shelves is a dream come true in and of itself. The fact that with each timed edition set we’ll be getting more of those famous big bads says that Mondo is listening and knows the fans of the show.
Do yourself a favor, set these figures up on the shelf and throw on the “When Halloween was Forever” episode. It has become a spooky season tradition to watch this episode every year. And honestly there’s nothing like reliving those childhood fall memories.
